Santa Clarita, meaning “Little St. Clare” in Spanish, is a city in northwestern Los Angeles County, California. With a population of 228,673 as of the 2020 census, it is the third-largest city in Los Angeles County, the 17th-largest in California, and ranks 103rd in the United States. Located approximately 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles, it spans 70.75 square miles in the Santa Clarita Valley along the Santa Clara River. The city is considered a prime example of an edge city, satellite city, or boomburb.

The Santa Clarita Valley has been inhabited since the arrival of the Chumash people, who were later displaced by the Tataviam around 450 AD. Following Spanish colonization of Alta California, Rancho San Francisco was established, covering much of the valley. In 1875, Henry Mayo Newhall purchased the rancho and founded the towns of Saugus and Newhall. The Newhall Land and Farming Company played a significant role in the area’s growth. Santa Clarita was officially incorporated as a city in December 1987, bringing together the communities of Canyon Country, Newhall, Saugus, and Valencia. While unified as a city, these communities retain their distinct identities, with residents often identifying with their specific area. Santa Clarita is bordered to the west by the Golden State Freeway (I-5), while the Antelope Valley Freeway (CA-14) forms part of its irregular eastern boundary. These two major highways intersect at Newhall Pass, near the city’s southernmost point.
